Summary

What if you were imprisoned for all eternity?

In the aftermath of the Ritual of Night, everything has changed。

The wizard Relos Var and the powerful demon Xaltorath are both moving forward with their plans to free and control the King of Demons so they can take over the world。

Kihrin has his own ideas about how to achieve victory, but for the friends, enemies, and lovers who have been unwillingly gathered together to help him, the cost may prove far too dear。

Stopping their enemies from freeing Vol Karoth is looking less and less possible。

Because—thanks to Kihrin—they're now trapped in the same prison as the King of Demons himself。

I am shook ! There is so much rep in these books, they are just perfection, I don’t think I could love them more and there is nothing to criticise in this book at all, nada, nothing。 Perfection。Thanks to Tor Books and Black Crow PR for a free copy for my honest opinion。 。。。more

As always, well written and worthy。 The book felt slow, especially after the beginning but was worth persevering through the feeling。 Looking forward to the next, and I believe, final chapter of the adventure。

I was confused by the storyline and I found it difficult to follow。 The constant back and forth of different character's memories was frustrating, and while the focus on relationships was evident, I wasn't always sure how these served the plot。 I have now read all four books。 I liked the first and second, was lukewarm on the third。 If there is a fifth, I'm not sure that I will read it and I resent abandoning a storyline that I have invested so much of my time in。 I was confused by the storyline and I found it difficult to follow。 The constant back and forth of different character's memories was frustrating, and while the focus on relationships was evident, I wasn't always sure how these served the plot。 I have now read all four books。 I liked the first and second, was lukewarm on the third。 If there is a fifth, I'm not sure that I will read it and I resent abandoning a storyline that I have invested so much of my time in。 。。。more

"You will wait。Until there is no more waiting possible。 And then you will choose whether we live or die。But know this-even though I have lived a life as full of thin, small regrets as a cherry tree full of petals in the spring, this will be my largest: that I could not be there with you, right then, to share the space between never and always while waiting for the sun to rise。"Each and every book in this series has just captivated me。 How is it that Jenn just keeps subverting expectations for ho "You will wait。Until there is no more waiting possible。 And then you will choose whether we live or die。But know this-even though I have lived a life as full of thin, small regrets as a cherry tree full of petals in the spring, this will be my largest: that I could not be there with you, right then, to share the space between never and always while waiting for the sun to rise。"Each and every book in this series has just captivated me。 How is it that Jenn just keeps subverting expectations for how you think this book will be structured or how will things transpire and then。。。。oh, it's so not that but it's so much MORE!! The way all the threads of all the characters twist and mold and eventually all come together for yet another ending that just sends everything in a different direction。 Honestly, I marvel at her ability to do this book after book and am so excited to know all the answers are in the next book and yet incredibly sad that the journey with these characters will end。 Mild spoilers for Memory of Souls:The House of Always picks up essentially right after the events with Kihrin and Talon that ended with Kihrin in Kharas Gulgoth with Vol Karoth。 All of the various characters that were left in Quuros and the Manol all somehow end up together in the lighthouse at Shadrag Gor, trying to figure out how to understand and navigate what Kihrin has done。 Twelve people who honestly don't at all like each other, want to be around each other or want to depend on each other for survival。 It's a remarkable way to tell such a complex story with so many moving pieces。 And yes, it is still just as complex and wonderful as all the other books。 I love how the relationship between Kihrin, Teraeth and Janel continues to grow, as does Senera's and Thurvishar's。 But the standout characters for me in this book are Galen, Qown and Sheloran, they are wonderful together。 Can't really get into any more detail as that would be spoilery。 This series does not get nearly enough attention that it needs, it's truly marvelous fantasy, with some of the best LGBTQ rep I have read throughout all five books。 Do you need all your brain cells turned on when you read it, yes, but the rewards are well worth it!! 。。。more

I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review。 I love this series so much。 And I normally listen to them, because they’re chonkers but also because the audio production is great。 There are so many characters yet they all come to life so well! It’s hard to review this without spoilers - especially as this is a book with lots of back story and gap filling around the events of previous books。 By putting all the characters in the same place we get so much depth of informati I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review。 I love this series so much。 And I normally listen to them, because they’re chonkers but also because the audio production is great。 There are so many characters yet they all come to life so well! It’s hard to review this without spoilers - especially as this is a book with lots of back story and gap filling around the events of previous books。 By putting all the characters in the same place we get so much depth of information, it’s fantastic! Plus I love any time I get to see them all interact around each other。 My only criticism is for a chonky book, it is one where you don’t end up miles away from where you started。 It’s the book equivalent of a tv backstory episode。 There is one MAJOR concession to this though, and it’s a good one。 And honestly everyone loves a backstory episode for minor characters。 So it’s hardly a criticism at all。 Honestly if you like your fantasy with:- complex and multithreaded storylines- lots of characters- dragons- gods and goddesses- morally grey characters- seriously they have hearts of gold but they kill a lot of people- fun magic stones with awesome powersThen I can’t recommend the A Chorus of Dragons series enough。 4。5 stars 。。。more

I enjoyed this book after I got into it, but with all the books in this series, I feel like I have to reread the books that came before to remember what is happening。 The author even put a summary at the beginning this time, but the summary read like gobbledegook -- there are so many characters, reincarnations, and plot paths that my brain couldn't process it。The back-and-forth narration style that Lyons uses in her other books works even worse in this one。 In previous books it went back and for I enjoyed this book after I got into it, but with all the books in this series, I feel like I have to reread the books that came before to remember what is happening。 The author even put a summary at the beginning this time, but the summary read like gobbledegook -- there are so many characters, reincarnations, and plot paths that my brain couldn't process it。The back-and-forth narration style that Lyons uses in her other books works even worse in this one。 In previous books it went back and forth on two timelines from two narrators, until late in the books the storylines meet up for the denouncement。 In this book, it was two narrators pulling memories from multiple characters, so really it's ??? number of narrators with ??? number of timelines。 I read 2-3 chapters, then stopped and skimmed the two previous books because I felt like I had missed a huge portion of the story。 Turns out I had, not because I'd forgotten the story, but because this books jumps ahead several months and then much later in the book explains how we got here。 I don't think this style worked for this book; it felt very forced。I thought it was interesting that Lyons thanked someone in the acknowledgements for helping her sex up the book, because I thought the sex scenes were unrealistic。 It felt very Stephen King - "I'm in deathly peril and could be attacked at any moment? Man, that makes me horny!"However, I did enjoy the different characters' storylines and seeing how the series will wrap up in the next book。 This book very much feels like the filler where not much happens but it's setting up the thrilling conclusion。 。。。more

Good story, but too many points of view and complicated gods/politics meant I had to really concentrate when reading to keep track of it all。 I prefer a little less complex novels most of the time。。。 But better than too simple, for sure。

DNF。 This book was bad for the same reason as the last, but it was even harder to go through。 The whole book is just an interpolation of flashbacks from people I don't care about, and Kihrin being angsty at S'arric inside their psychological prison。 DNF。 This book was bad for the same reason as the last, but it was even harder to go through。 The whole book is just an interpolation of flashbacks from people I don't care about, and Kihrin being angsty at S'arric inside their psychological prison。 。。。more

I listened to this one on audio and I have to admit that I didn't love it as much as the previous books。 It seemed like a lot more talking and less action。 It got more interesting as it progressed but only just at the last quarter or so of the book。 I'm interested to see how the author wraps it all up so I will be showing up for the next installment。 I listened to this one on audio and I have to admit that I didn't love it as much as the previous books。 It seemed like a lot more talking and less action。 It got more interesting as it progressed but only just at the last quarter or so of the book。 I'm interested to see how the author wraps it all up so I will be showing up for the next installment。 。。。more

I swear that The Chorus of Dragons series gets better with each book。 I have such mixed feelings about finishing up "The House of Always", which is book four of the series。 On the one hand this was a fantastic read, but on the other it means that there is only one more book left and I'm not ready to leave this world yet。I had such a hard time trying to write a spoiler free review for this book since it is the fourth in the series。 I feel like the entire series has been building up to this moment I swear that The Chorus of Dragons series gets better with each book。 I have such mixed feelings about finishing up "The House of Always", which is book four of the series。 On the one hand this was a fantastic read, but on the other it means that there is only one more book left and I'm not ready to leave this world yet。I had such a hard time trying to write a spoiler free review for this book since it is the fourth in the series。 I feel like the entire series has been building up to this moment and the outcome did not disappoint。I will say that Jenn Lyons still has lots of surprises up her sleeve for the reader。 After the last book I thought that she was going to follow the George RRR Martin route and start killing off the main characters, but now I'm not so sure。 I'm such a sucker for a happy ending though that I really hope that all the main characters make it and ride off into the sunset so to speak。 In terms of the characters themselves, I continue to enjoy getting to know them and uncovering their secrets。 Being a fan of the idea of soulmates and reincarnation I've also really enjoyed finding out more about the main characters past lives and the ties that bind them together。 I also love the romance aspect of the story and how well done it was。 You'd think that with an epic fantasy like this there would be no room for romance, but Jenn Lyons managed to develop the individual love stories so organically。 This is also probably the only series I've read where I found myself invested in all the couples and not just one or two。I could probably go on and on for hours about "The House of Always" and the Chorus of Dragons series。 It is definitely a 5 out of 5 read for me。 If you enjoy epic fantasy then you will love this book and this series。For more reviews like this check out my blog at http://reviewsbym。com 。。。more

A Chorus of Dragons is a series that has, for me, been defined by its snarky footnotes。 They not only illuminate the main story with facts, observations, and leading questions, but they sort of build a secondary narrative alongside it。 It's probably the only series I've ever read where I insist on having the hardcover in my hands so that my eyes (and mind) can immediately leap from text to footnote and back again, rather than waiting for the page or chapter to end。As such, it's entirely fitting A Chorus of Dragons is a series that has, for me, been defined by its snarky footnotes。 They not only illuminate the main story with facts, observations, and leading questions, but they sort of build a secondary narrative alongside it。 It's probably the only series I've ever read where I insist on having the hardcover in my hands so that my eyes (and mind) can immediately leap from text to footnote and back again, rather than waiting for the page or chapter to end。As such, it's entirely fitting that The House of Always feels like a novel consisting entirely of those footnotes, with footnotes of their own。 Jenn Lyons largely pauses the action to place her characters into a locked room mystery where they bond over reliving painful memories of events from the first three books。 The result is a sometimes confusing jumble of familiar scenes as experienced from new points-of-view, a beautiful mess that I found myself chafing at for a while, until I began seeing the connections and accepting that all of this really was taking us somewhere important。While the book does advance the story and explore more of the mythology, and while it is book-ended by a glorious battle against a giant kraken and a mad dragon, this is more a character study that anything else。 Lyons invites us to get to know all the key players, not as protagonists/antagonists or plot devices, but as individuals - and, in doing so, she illuminates just how gloriously diverse this series has been。 The bisexual, polyamorous romance between Kihrin, Janel, and Teraeth has always been sort of front-and-center, and that gets realized in some really fun ways, as does the homoerotic tension/flirting between Galen and Qown。 The sapphic love between Talea and Xivan gets a story worthy of their history together; Sheloran gets to talk more about her love for other women wherever and whenever the mood takes her, without being slut-shamed for it; Senera and Thurvishar are given space to explore their asexual dynamic as friends and colleagues with feelings; and there are so many other casual references to changing gender, stepping outside gender roles, and loving across gender lines that it's honestly hard to keep track。Getting back to the story, although there's not a lot of 'new' plot developments here, there are more revelations, expositions, and elaborations than any book has a right to, putting so much of the existing story into new context, with new significance。 Once I accepted that Shadrag Gor was the story, and not just a prelude or a stepping stone to a next part of the book, I stopped chafing at what I initially felt was the repetitiveness and instead embraced that deeper understanding。 It took some time for me to get there, and I paused around the one-third mark, not sure if/when I'd get back to it, but the last two-thirds absolutely flew by。 The climax, where everybody came together in a sort of heroic/heist adventure was the most fun I've had on the page in ages, and I'm so ready for The Discord of Gods to drop next!https://beauty-in-ruins。blogspot。com/。。。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 It's a bottle episode! I am sad to say that this was the first entry in this series that didn't totally wow me。 The stuff with Kihrin being trapped was very repetitive and slowed things down for me, but I will say that the reveal that he was really fighting himself all along was very satisfying。 The undead Kraken VS dragon fight at the end also did a lot to bring me back into the fold。 Overall this wasn't my favorite entry, but it was still great and I can't wait to see where this story goes。 It's a bottle episode! This whole book was kinda like a breakfast club-esque story telling to solve a mystery I rlly liked it。 Especially since all the characters finally met and interacted。Also can we appreciate how it basically started with ‘kihrin: I have to sacrifice myself for the grater good and to save everyone I loveeveryone he loves: can you stop being so dramatic *bodily drags him back from the afterlife*’

I finished this a last week。 I needed time to recoup from that ending。 Not because it was particularly exciting, I was just confused and many questions were knocking around in my head。 "Wait? Is it done? Did I miss something? Things were still happening。 What happened to that one thing that was happening over here? Kihrin? Bruh。。。。you done and gone?"(no context to avoid any spoiler info)。 So, safe to say, I'm ready for the next book。 There was definitely a bunch of emotional moments for the char I finished this a last week。 I needed time to recoup from that ending。 Not because it was particularly exciting, I was just confused and many questions were knocking around in my head。 "Wait?
